About
Purpose
Our purpose at Datatype is to enable people and organisations to do data better. What does that mean exactly?
Here's an expanded explanation of 'do data better.'
- Do
- refers to the agency that people and organisations have when it comes to data. The significance of data is growing exponentially. The impact of that growth, both good and bad, will be driven by what people and organisations do (or don't do) to navigate it.
- Data
- highlights data as a first-class object and asset. Our digital world generates a higher volume of data at a greater velocity and with more variety than ever before. Advances in data processing and analytics, including emerging AI capabilities, continue to unlock significant opportunities as well as challenges in the space.
- Better
- looks at how we can better navigate and improve on how we work with data. The term 'best', as in 'best practices', is intentionally not used here. We think a more effective orientation is towards doing data work better in an incremental and meaningful way.
Motivation
Our motivation for Datatype comes from the following:
- Data is becoming increasingly important in the world that we live in.
- It's important to do data well to increase the positive impacts and reduce the negative ones.
- Data work is hard. (There is no silver bullet.)
- We want what we do to inspire and motivate data practitioners (i.e. anyone working with data).
- We want to build and create things that help people and organisations do data well.

This is in no way an exhaustive or refined list, but it's a start.
