Overview

Welcome to the Datatype knowledge base. Glad you’re here.

This knowledge base is for data practitioners. We cast a wide net when we think of data practitioners. If you are trying to do something meaningful with data, whether that’s as an individual, a team leader or an executive officer, then you are a data practitioner.

Data work is hard. When it’s done well, data solutions surface data that is:

  • Discoverable/Accessible/Understood/Usable
  • Accurate Enough/Consistent Enough
  • Complete Enough/Current Enough/Granular Enough
  • Governed/Trusted/Respected/Secured

When done well, data is a major value driver. When not done well, data becomes a missed opportunity and a risk. All too often, data is not done as it could be, leaving organisations stuck in a space of missed opportunities and exposed risks. At Datatype, we want to help people and organisations do data better.

We have a few thoughts about knowledge that inform our approach to this knowledge base.

  • Knowledge is for the people (easy to find, access, understand, apply, etc.)
  • Knowledge is also for AI agents but we’re not focusing on that yet
  • Knowledge is for sharing (please copy/paste/adapt - attribution is optional)
  • Knowledge should be grounded in stable fundamentals (e.g. principals, broad patterns)
  • Knowledge should be regularly maintained and curated
  • Less is more. Reduce as much noise as possible for knowledge messages to be clear
  • Knowledge is the how AND the why
  • Knowledge is to be challenged, debated and adapted constructively

You’ll notice a few helpful elements on this page for navigation.

  • Use the search bar at the top to search for content throughout the knowledge base
  • Use the navigation pane on the left to explore the hierarchy of pages
  • With a page selected, use the navigation pane on the right to see how the page is broken down

The intention for the knowledge base is to be more ‘food for thought’ as opposed to an authoritative artefact. We hope you are able to use the content within it to support you in your journey as a data practitioner.
