Data functions
Data Governance
Section titled “Data Governance”If we genuinely see data as an asset, one of the fundamental functions we need in place and operating effectively is data governance. What data do we have? Is it reasonable for us to have it? Do we have the right things in place to secure it? How do we make decisions about the data? Who is accountable for that data?
Data Platform
Section titled “Data Platform”The technical foundation for any data workloads is a robust, performant, scalable, extensible (+ additional adjectives) data platform. At a basic level, the data platform ingests data from source systems, processes and stores that data and presents it to downstream consumers. On top of that, the data platform also contains tooling for data engineering, business intelligence & analytics and data science & AI.
Data Engineering
Section titled “Data Engineering”Business Intelligence or Data Science & AI use cases often require integrating data from a range of different sources and storing them in a structured (e.g. relational database) or unstructured (e.g. blob store or data lake file system) space. This is data engineering.
Business Intelligence & Analytics
Section titled “Business Intelligence & Analytics”In some ways, business intelligence (BI) is just a fancy way of saying reporting. However, business intelligence now is much more than what traditional reporting used to be.
Data Science & AI
Section titled “Data Science & AI”This is something that everyone get’s really excited about, but is actually really challenging to do well. It feels like there have been quite a few false starts here. However, the emerging tsunami of AI being integrated into just about everything could actually see this one sticking.
